WINNING IN THE MARKET PLACE

I’m so glad to be with you again, sharing the word in pragmatic ways, building the kingdom and empowering us in the market place. I want to share with you seven things that would help you win in the market place; secure that job, obtain the contract, get the deal done and win you the proposal.
I’m looking at the book of 1 Samuel chapter 17. We can preach a thousand and one messages from this powerful scripture, but today I’m going to stay in the market place.

Imagine you’re in between contracts, looking for new opportunities, out of contracts or job seeking?
Perhaps you’re a business person and you are looking for new openings, new opportunities, or even starting out new and you don’t even know how and where to start.
There are seven lessons I want to share with you from this day in the life of David.
David the entrepreneur, David the contractor, David the job seeker, so fasten your seat belts and come with me on a fantastic journey.

“Behold, the champion, the Philistine of Gath, Goliath by name, came up out of the ranks of the Philistines, and spoke the same words as before. And David heard him.”
(1 Sam 17: 23)
LESSON 1: DAVID DISCERNED IT: THE JOB OPPORTUNITY/ THE BUSINESS OPPORTUNITY.
David heard him.
Do you have your ears peeled? Are you on the look out for interesting offers, opportunities and openings or have you given up on IT altogether?
“All the men of Israel, when they saw the man, fled from him” (v.24)
Everybody was complaining and afraid, but David ‘heard’ the opportunity.
Are you constantly looking for opportunities where others have given up or are you one to run, give up and complain like the others?
Oral Roberts once said ‘If you can see the invisible, you can achieve the impossible’
Moses saw the burning bush, Abram saw the ram in the thicket, Joshua and Caleb saw the promise land, so WHAT DO YOU SEE?
Can you SEE? DISCERN?

David saw an opportunity for advancement and promotion. In Goliath, he saw a new business opportunity. In Goliath he saw a new job opportunity, Stop dwelling in the past, God throws acorns Infront of you daily but are you too pre-occupied with the current, the obvious and the usual that you can’t see it?

“And David said to the men who stood by him, “What shall be done for the man who kills this Philistine” (v.26)
2) WHAT IS IN IT FOR ME?
If it makes sense but not financial sense, why would you take IT on?
Why open the shop when the numbers don’t add up?
Why take the job if you’ll spend more than your salary each month; to get there, eat, pay bills, rent/mortgage?
Most businesses fail in the first 12 months because they didn’t add up the numbers and the numbers didn’t add up!
‘Oh I didn’t know that’ ‘oh they didn’t tell me at the interview’ ‘oh I wasn’t aware that was the case’
What’s in it for you? Who pays the taxes? Is it Net or Gross? Can you afford to live on it?

Most people’s jobs gives them a lane on the rat race, so they don’t give their best, all because the money they earn doesn’t motivate them to perform and eventually they lose the jobs because IT is not enough!
Does it make money sense?
Is the contract that great or you just want to use it to ‘while away the time?’
Is IT all that or you just want to be seen to be going somewhere daily? Hello!
Don’t just take the job because it’ll make you look cool, don’t take it on because it sounds okay, don’t conclude it’s an opportunity until the numbers add up otherwise you’ll regret it few weeks down the line! You have to know what is IN IT for you before you jump into it.
David asked ‘what’s in it for me?’
Are you asking the right questions about the offer?

“And Eli’ab’s anger was kindled against David, and he said, “Why have you come down? And with whom have you left those few sheep” (v.28)
3) DON’T LET OTHER PEOPLE’S EXPERIENCES DETER YOU
“David what have you come to do here.” “They don’t hire people like you here” “Go back to the sheep and leave military matters to us” “Since I’ve been here Only top executives are hired for Goliaths, not you and I”
Beware of the “experts” They know everything and have seen it all, they claim.
They tell you all sorts of gory stories and convince you IT is not for you!
They are elders, mates, friends, relatives, old employees, acquaintances; they know the family history and know every story!
‘Nobody ever achieved that’ ‘it doesn’t work that way here’ ‘the last person to try that ended up in debts’ ‘the last business opened here like that didn’t make it past the first three months’

Eliab had seen it all and decided David would not cope with the job. He concluded in his mind that such business opportunities are not for people from their type of family!
Beware who you listen to. Beware of those giving you advice, most times they say you can’t because they didn’t get IT, or they say you can’t because they can’t dare to dream like you.
Even the king doubted him “You are not able to go against this Philistine to fight with him; for you are but a youth, and he has been a man of war from his youth” (v.33)
If you stay long enough with them, they’ll convince you you can’t! And they’ll show you how nothing can be done about your situation.
Don’t listen to them! Let their statements challenge you to higher achievement.

“Your servant used to keep sheep for his father; and when there came a lion, or a bear, and took a lamb from the flock, I went after him and smote him and delivered it out of his mouth; and if he arose against me, I caught him by his beard, and smote him and killed him. Your servant has killed both lions and bears”
4) SHOW YOUR RESUME, YOUR CV, AND YOUR BUSINESS PROFILE.
Have you written out your CV highlighting your achievements?
Have you presented your business plan immaculately in a way that is impossible to refuse?
David brought out his CV: lion killed, bear devoured, bad people dealt with.
Where is your CV? Where is your business plan? Where is your propensity study?
What have you done before that is relevant to the job offer?

What experience have you got that would endear the panel toward you and your company?
Prospective employers want to know.
Prospective lenders are dying to hear you show off your resume.
If you don’t have one, Make one up that is relevant to your situation!
David had NEVER handled a bow, spear, shield, arrow, axe or any weapon, yet he produced an impeccable CV of battles; ‘I do hand combat’ ‘I would get the job done with stones’ ‘I have done it before with my staff’
Can you convince your audience you have what it takes? Can you show them you can be successful if given the chance?

“The Lord who delivered me from the paw of the lion and from the paw of the bear, will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine”
(v.37) “This day the Lord will deliver you into my hand, and I will strike you down, and cut off your head; and I will give the dead bodies of the host of the Philistines this day to the birds of the air and to the wild beasts of the earth” (v.46)
5) HAVE YOU COMMANDED YOUR MORNING AND YOUR EVENING?
You have to wake up at night and rise up in the morning to decree and declare!
Job 22:28 says ‘Thou shalt also decree a thing, and it shall be established unto thee: and the light shall shine upon thy ways’
Positive affirmations, faith declarations and powerful words of God released into the atmosphere are very powerful and effective tools to help you reverse the unwanted and seal your victory.
Evil powers release hexes, ill wishes, spells, charms and negative things into the atmosphere in the night to deny you, deter you, limit you, spoil your day, prevent your breakthrough, stop IT from happening, deny your opportunity and steal your glory.

So what do you do to break those spells?
Job 38:12 says ‘Have you commanded your morning before the day begins?’
Speak the word and make positive affirmations.
The spiritual realm cannot discern whether you’re joking or serious, it just responds to the spoken word – Rhema – as it leaves your mouth.
So start using the word of God as a weapon and not a hindrance.
David commanded the day and affirmed what he would do “I have done it before and I will do it again” “I will overcome you today”
Have you commanded your morning before the day begins?
“I will get the job again, as I did before”
“I will turn my business around as I’ve done before” “I will be healed” “I am winning again” “I will be the head and not the tail” “I will be above and not beneath” “afflictions will not rise again”
By the time you finish declaring and decreeing, you’re ready for the interview, you’re ready to face the panel, you’re ready for business breakthrough and you’re ready to take on the world.
Make bold declarations so that your day is a winning one and your confidence is stirred up from inside.

“Then Saul clothed David with his armor; he put a helmet of bronze on his head, and clothed him with a coat of mail……… .And David girded his sword over his armor, and he tried in vain to go, for he was not used to them. Then David said to Saul, “I cannot go with these; for I am not used to them.” And David put them off.
6. USE YOUR OWN PROVEN TECHNIQUES, AND FORMULA.
David tried to do it HOW they asked him to, but IT didn’t work; the clothes were too heavy, he was too hot, he was too cold.
He tried the formula proven by the others, but in as much as he did, he couldn’t imitate them.
He tried to use their speech, he tried to plagiarise, but he stuttered with every sentence.
David said ‘I can’t pretend any longer, take these things off me and let me do it my way’
Don’t use someone else’s CV or it might come back to hunt you.
Don’t copy someone else’s business plan, or they may just find you out.

Are you ready to win? ; Use your CV, use your KNOWHOW, use your God given intellect in that field, let you application be yours.
Sometimes it’s the unique that would see you through and not the usual, sometimes it is YOU that would make the deal and not an imitation. They’ve seen all that COPY GAME before, so use YOU and you’ll see how confident you’ll be when you’re true to yourself.

“When the Philistine arose and came and drew near to meet David, David ran quickly toward the battle line to meet the Philistine.. took out a stone, and slung it, and struck the Philistine on his forehead..and he fell on his face to the ground. So David prevailed over the Philistine… Then David ran and stood over the Philistine, and took his sword and drew it out of its sheath, and killed him, and cut off his head with it. (v.48-50)
7) BE BOLD AND TAKE ACTION
David had seen the opportunity, trusted God, believed in himself, confessed, prayed, fasted, made affirmations, used his own techniques, yet he didn’t stop there. He did the most important thing of all, HE TOOK ACTION.
Most of us do everything but the most important thing; we finish preparing and praying then “we just continue believing God for what He has already done, over and over again” Where is the action?
Most of us do all the preparation but when it’s time for action, we procrastinate: “I’ll do it next week” “I’ll put forward my tender tomorrow” “I’ll call them in two days time when I’m finally ready”
Is that you or someone you know?
We do the whole preparation and when actually faced with Goliath, we run and say ‘God’s time is the best’ God’s time is NOW!
Get over IT – fear, procrastination – and just DO IT!

Stop throwing the stones at Goliath from afar and running back, or you’ll never be able to finish Goliath off.
Stop making excuses and get on with the job. Don’t be too spiritual, don’t use God as an excuse, God is waiting for you to go where it may hurt but where you’ll overcome, where you may be rejected but where he wants to see you through. God is waiting for ACTION!
Are you truly ready for the miracle? Then take action.
You’ve written the proposal so what are you waiting for? Submit it and defend it!
You’ve submitted your CV, ring them up!
David went forward when he saw Goliath, he took his stones and aimed, and when the stone didn’t kill Goliath, he didn’t say ‘that’s the will of God’
David ran forward to finish Goliath off.

Have you thrown a stone and still wondering if it’s God’s will?
May God give you the power to take action and follow through in order to receive your breakthrough and blessings in Jesus name.

I hope you’ve been blessed.
