FOOTBALL PLAYS THE VICTIM In 1967, Edson Arantes Des Nascimento, popularly known as Pele flew to Nigeria and stopped the Nigerian civil war for 48hrs. The two factions involved in the Nigerian Civil War agreed to a 48-hour ceasefire so they could watch Pelé play an exhibition game in Lagos, Nigeria’s most populous city and war bowed to the demands of football. In 2005, as Didier Drogba and his Ivorien teammates qualified for the World Cup finals in Germany, their country Cote D’Ivoire was enduring a five year bloody civil war. Moments after leading his nation to qualify for the finals in Germany, Drogba picked up a microphone in the dressing room and, surrounded by his team-mates and infront of the world television crew, he fell to his knees live on national...

“Now the Spirit of the LORD departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the LORD tormented him……… And Saul was very angry, and this saying displeased him; he said, “They have ascribed to David ten thousands, and to me they have ascribed thousands; and what more can he have but the kingdom?” And Saul eyed David from that day on……… And Saul cast the spear, for he thought, “I will pin David to the wall.” But David evaded him twice……… And Saul spoke to Jonathan his son and to all his servants, that they should kill David” (1Sam 16:14, 1Sam 18: 8,9, 11, 1Sam 19:1) From the moment David became a giant killer and from the time he was anointed and set apart from the others, David’s life was in...

“And the Egyptians were urgent with the people, to send them out of the land in haste; for they said, “We are all dead men.” ….. And the people of Israel journeyed from Ram′eses to Succoth….. The time that the people of Israel dwelt in Egypt was four hundred and thirty years. And at the end of four hundred and thirty years, on that very day, all the hosts of the Lord went out from the land of Egypt” Ex 12: 33,37, 40,41   The Israelites in this scripture had been in collective captivity for generations. Their great grandparents had served with rigour, their grandparents were hostages and their parents had laboured in confinement. With over four decades in captivity, they faced insurmountable odds: success had been denied to them, and...

HOTSPUR-T FOR THE YOUTHS

»Posted by on Nov 10, 2015 in Football | 0 comments

As I watched Tottenham Hotspurs dominate the North London derby on Sunday, I couldn’t help but notice the array of young talents on display at the Emirates Stadium. To think Dele Alli and Harry Kane among others have only just made their debut in the Barclays Premiership either this season or the previous season is in itself a beauty to behold. Is this credit to the manager? Or is there a bigger picture overseeing things from the back end? Is this Mauricio Pochettino? Or is this the ENIC group leading the way?   Even if we give credit to Mauricio Pochettino for Harry Kane and Dele Alli, what about Kyle Walker, Andros Townsend, Aaron Lennon, Ryan Mason, Rose, Bentaleeb, Naughton, Dier, Trippier, Tom Carrol, Ryan Fredericks and all? It is obvious that...

JOSE WILL KLOPP IT TOO!

»Posted by on Nov 3, 2015 in Football | 0 comments

About this time last year, world football focused on an industrial town to the West of Germany; Dortmund.  Few months before Borussia Dortmund had won the DFB Pokal Cup (German equivalent of The FA Cup), they had played the previous year’s Champions League final, only narrowly losing to Bayern Munich in extra time, and had finished the Bundesliga in second position for the previous two seasons. They had won the previous titles back to back  under Jurgen Klopp and FC Borussia Dortmund had been the first name on the table for several weeks in the past four years. This time last year they were first as well, but from the wrong end of the league table! Dortmund were bottom of the league and were battling relegation. Under Jurgen Klopp two seasons earlier, they had...
